Three BEFC members ( Mr. Kumar, Smt. Malathi, and Mr. Gajanana) and three volunteers (Shruti Birur, Anjana, and Emma Birur) visited the four schools and distributed steel bookcases and age-appropriate books to each school in order to start small libraries for the students. Also BEFC gave out English-Kannada dictionaries to the graduating classes at each school, filters for drinking water, alarm clocks and other school supplies.
New uniforms (navy blue shorts and skirts and checkered red tops) were distributed to all the children at Uppar Camp Higher Primary School.
BEFC members participated in Indian Independence Day celebrations and flag hoisting in KP school and Uppar Camp school the morning of August 15, 2008.
Mr. B.C.S. Kumar, President of BEFC, visited the town of Bukkambudi to discuss with the teachers at the Government Kannada Higher Primary School (HPS) on the educational needs of the students at the school. This school will be added to the BEFC family of schools starting January 2009. There are 240 students attending six grades (1 to 6) at this school. Mr. Kumar also met with the Headmaster at the Government Urdu Higher Primary School in Birur to discuss the students educational needs. This school with 90 students will be added to the BEFC family of schools starting January 2009.
Two one-day teacher training workshops were organized and conducted on
June 3rd in Tarikere and on June 4th in Birur. For the first workshop,
fifty teachers from 41 primary schools attended the workshop in
Tarikere. Fifty-five teachers from thirty-five primary schools from
the town of Birur and surrounding villages attended the second
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Mr. Jayanna, the Block Education Officer for the Birur block and BEFC formalizing the BEFC's work with four Government primary schools in the Birur block. The two additional schools in the Birur block are: Birur Nammoora Urdu Higher Primary School (60 students) and Saraswathipuram Government Higher Primary School (255 SC/ST students in grades 1 to 7). The other two schools in BEFC family in the Birur block being K. P School and Uppar Camp school.
Mr. Kumar and Smt. Malathi along with Mr. Gajanana and Ms. Naya Nadargi (a BEFC volunteer) visited Birur and met with the students and teachers at the two new schools. Discussions were held on what resources BEFC could provide to the students at the school for the current school year (June 2009 to April 2010)
During this trip, the BEFC team also visited Government Higher Primary School in Chikkanangala village. This is the third school in Tarikere Education Block adopted by BEFC. The sixty-eight students (grades 1 to 7) at the school were provided with school uniforms in September 2009. June 2010:
BEFC members and volunteers (Mr. Kumar, Smt. Malathi, Ms. Devika, Dr. Gajanana, and Dr. Sabrina) visited the four BEFC sponsored schools in Birur. All the children and teachers at the four schools (Nammoora Urdu School, Kharidi Palamma Kannada School, Uppar Camp Primary School, and Sarswathipuram Primary School) were starting their new school year. During the visit to K.P School, BEFC distributed footwear to all the children. At a function held at Saraswathipuram School attended by the teachers and students and presided by the Block Education Officer Mr. Jayanna, BEFC distributed school uniform and shoes to all the students in grades 5 to 7.
BEFC members also visited the four other schools in Bukkambudi, Billahalli and Chkkanangala to interact with the students and the teachers to learn about the needs of the students and teachers at these four schools. Copies of English-Kannada dictionaries were distributed to all the students in the seventh grade. August 2010:
A presentation was made on the BEFC's work with rural primary schools in Karnataka at Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Alumni Association Conference held at University of California at San Diego on August 14, 2010. Several presentations on the charitable work started by IISc alumni were presented at this conference (http://conference.iiscaana.org). Over one hundred alumni attended this one-day conference. An upgraded science Lab was opened at Government Higher Primary School at Uppar Camp in Birur. BEFC provided the funds for the chemistry equipment for the lab. Mr. Jayanna, Block Education Officer for Birur along with Dr. Gajanana Birur and Mr. BCS Kumar of BEFC, and Smt. Nagaratnamma, Headmistress of the school and Shanmukhappa the SDMC president spoke at opening function.
An one-day teacher training workshop was held on January 27, 2011 at Vikasana near Tarikere. Forty-two selected teachers from government primary schools in the Birur and Tarikere Education Blocks attended the workshop. The theme of the workshop was "Ethics and Values" and the presentations were made by Prof. Raghothama Rao, Dr. Gajanana Birur, Mr BCS Kumar, Ms. Devika, Smt. Malathi, and Mr. Sridhar.
